Reservations overview

The reservations system is used to reserve specific items on behalf of borrowers. Once you have identified the borrower requiring the reservation, you place a reservation against a work. At this point, all items available for that work are reserved, although you can exclude any number of items from the reservation. You can also use the work title to identify additional works (and associated items) to reserve.

When reserved items are discharged, Talis Alto automatically alerts you, and allows you to satisfy the reservation so that it is ready for collection by the requester from your site's reservation shelf. If required, you can place items in transit for collection at other sites. The priority field allows you prioritise the allocation of reserved items amongst competing borrowers. Alternatively, you can simply discharge the reserved item without satisfying it, and satisfy the reservation when the issue desk is less busy.

Talis Alto allows you to view all reservations for a particular borrower, or to view all reservations placed against a given item, or against a work (which may include several Items).

Reservation status

The reservation status reflects the progress of this reservation. The status field is for display only: it is not editable directly. The following diagram shows a typical reservation workflow, complete with the different states within the reservation lifecycle. Note that reservations can be cancelled at any time.

The reservation statuses are described in the following table:

Reservation
status

Description

Not effective

The reservation will become 'Active' at some date and time in the future.

Active

The reservation is active and currently outstanding.

Waiting Collection

The item is available for collection by the Borrower.

Collected

The reservation has been satisfied and collected by the reserver.

Uncollected

The reservation was satisfied, but the item has not been collected by the borrower.

Cancelled

The reservation was cancelled by the borrower.

Deleted

The reservation has been deleted by the system.

In transit is a quasi status, reflecting that an 'Active' reservation has an associated item in transit. In transit reservations are recorded as 'Active' status in the system.
