The Lyra Programme: Preparation

This section summarises the essential pre-requisites that must be carried out before you implement any of the Lyra Programme software releases.n

All Lyra releases require that you use Talis Alto for all of your library functions. There will not be an equivalent Talis Text version. This is mainly due to changes associated with ISBN-13. If you are already running Talis Alto but are still using Talis Text for some functions then you should be planning to implement Talis Alto throughout your library.

If you are not already running Talis Alto, you should implement it as soon as possible in advance of the first Lyra Foundation release. This allows staff to familiarise themselves with the look and feel of Talis Alto before getting to grips with the MARC 21 changes. For more information about upgrading to Talis Alto please refer to the Planning for Talis Alto Guide (requires customer login) and to the Talis Alto site.

Implement Talis Prism throughout your library

The MARC 21 and ISBN-13 capabilities introduced in the Lyra Foundation phase require Talis Prism as your OPAC throughout your library. Talis Web and Talis Text OPAC will not be developed for MARC 21 & ISBN-13 compatibility. If you already have Talis Prism but also are still using Talis Web or Talis Text OPAC, then you should be planning to implement Talis Prism throughout your library. For more information refer to the Talis Prism web pages.

If you are not already running Talis Prism, you should implement it as soon as possible in advance of the first Lyra Foundation release. For more information about upgrading to Talis Prism, please contact your Account Manager or email sales@talis.com.

Desktop Operating System

With MARC 21, you will have an extended character set using Unicode. Older operating systems can cause problems with the display of extended character sets. Therefore, if you have not already done so, you should be planning to upgrade your Talis Alto and Talis Prism desktops to Windows 2000 or XP.

MARC 21 Server Health Check

We will perform a remote audit of your system to determine whether you need to upgrade any hardware, not only for the Foundation Phase but also in readiness for Lyra Completion. We will also advise if any Talis products require upgrading.

MARC Organization Codes

One of the features of the Lyra Programme is a greater adherence to standards. Accordingly, we will be using codes from the MARC Code List for Organizations in appropriate parts of MARC 21 records, notably 040 - Cataloging Source. We need each customer library to tell us what their organization code is, so that we can include it in the conversion mapping configurations. Some of you already have a code, but please tell us what it is.

The library of Congress web site allows you to check whether you already have a code and, if not, to apply for one:http://www.loc.gov/marc/organizations/orgshome.html#requests

Please email you organization code to: terry.willan@talis.com
