Nottingham Trent University chooses Talis Aspire to manage its learning resource lists

2nd November 2009

Nottingham Trent University has chosen Talis Aspire to deliver a superior resource list experience for students and academics, helping learners to access the right learning materials at the right time - an increasingly important student satisfaction indicator.

Talis Aspire is a resource list management tool that meets the needs and expectations of today's students. Students entering the system see all the lists associated with their own courses and modules. Talis Aspire can handle resources in any format - not just books – and the uncluttered interface and well-designed features make the tool easy to use for students and academics alike. With Talis Aspire, students can easily recommend resources to their peers, or provide resource feedback for lecturers to review.

The selection of Talis Aspire reflects the importance of the student learning experience at Nottingham Trent University. As Mike Berrington, Deputy University Librarian (Customer Services), argues, "Talis Aspire will contribute to the learning and teaching excellence. Resource lists go to the heart of the student experience, because they are the most direct way in which academics guide their students through the learning process."

At a time of shrinking budgets across Higher Education, Nottingham Trent University is introducing Talis Aspire to ensure resource list provision is as efficient as possible, freeing up library staff to work with academics on other high priority areas. Furthermore, feedback and usage data from the undergraduate population - gathered using Talis Aspire - means the university can effectively target the best learning materials for ongoing expenditure.

Feedback and usage data from Talis Aspire will help to target Nottingham Trent University's investment in information on the best learning materials for its large undergraduate population.

Chris Clarke, Programme Manager of Talis' Education Division, said "We are delighted to welcome Nottingham Trent University into our growing community of Talis Aspire early adopters. The university's willingness to participate in our development process – and to make their resource list data available to other institutions – will help us to drive Talis Aspire forward as the natural choice for resource list management in Higher Education."

Mike Berrington added "We're very impressed with the refreshing levels of enthusiasm and customer focus among Talis staff. We're looking forward to shaping the future development of the product, and to making good use of Talis Aspire's knowledge base of resource list data shared across institutions."

The University of Manchester chooses Talis Aspire to manage its learning resource lists

28th October 2009

The University of Manchester has chosen Talis Aspire to manage its learning resource lists. The university makes considerable investment in information resources, and Talis Aspire - which combines a personalised view of resource lists with the ability to interact with peers and lecturers - will drive access to journals, e-books and other content.

Although levels of student satisfaction are already high, Talis Aspire will enhance the student learning experience by providing modern resource list management capabilities. Students entering the system will immediately see all the lists associated with their own courses and modules. Talis Aspire can handle resources in any format - not just books, and the uncluttered interface makes the tool easy to use. Students can also share information with their peers or provide feedback to lecturers about the usefulness of the resources listed, giving a clear picture of the value of specific information resources in the learning process. An integrated approach means that students can move easily from other learning tools such as the Virtual Learning Environment to access the resource list information they need for their studies.

Talis Aspire can also alert the library to items on the lists that may need to be ordered to meet student demand. As Lorraine Beard, Head of Information Systems at the John Rylands University Library, explains, "We understand the important role that a well-managed list can play in the support of teaching and learning in the university. Effective provision of those resources that the lecturer recommends is central to the mission of the library, and Talis Aspire will help us to deliver against this crucial element of our students' expectations." Talis Aspire makes these important communications between lecturers and the library more timely and efficient. Library staff effort can be refocused on other key areas.

Chris Clarke, Programme Manager of Talis' Education Division, said "We are delighted to welcome the University of Manchester as early adopters of Talis Aspire. This productive partnership will drive our resource list tool forward to meet more of the challenges that the 21st century learning and teaching environment faces."
