Partly in response to feedback from the Talis User Group surveys and meetings, we've completed a review of the product documentation stored on the Talis web server. Subsequently, we've removed a large amount of redundant material, and the remaining documentation has been re-organised into the following pages.

The full list of Talis Documentation, organised by product, can be found here.

Documents that have been published within the last 6 months are also published here. Most recently published documents are displayed at the top of the page.

In addition, we've re-indexed this revised material, so you should find your documentation search queries return more relevant results.

Our next initiative is to address the gaps in our current documentation set that this review identified. This will include the publication of new System Management documentation within the next few months.

Remember, you can subscribe to the Documentation RSS feed to ensure that you don't miss any documentation updates, or read about new updates on the Documentation Forum.

If you have any comments, please send an email to documentation@talis.com

Many thanks,

Talis is pleased to announce that Talis Alto 4.3 is now available on general release for libraries using Unix servers. A separate release for the libraries running on Windows servers will follow within the next few weeks.

For details of the new functionality please see the document What's New in Talis Alto 4.3. This document has been updated since its original publication. In response to comments from users, we have also produced What's New in Talis Alto 4.3 (System Manager Edition), which contains additional material.

Full details of how to obtain the files and install the software are given in the Release Notice. There is a separate version for libraries using the Scottish Smartcards.

These documents are all available both from http://www.talis.com/alto and from the Documentation page http://www.talis.com/documentation.

Yes, that's what I do, as recommended by Anne Stacey (see my post above).
I don't know why it's so important for authority headings not to have trailing full stops.

I stand to be corrected by anyone who knows better, but I think the trick is to create/edit the authority record as necessary but then (and assuming the only difference between the heading in the authority record and the heading in the records is the full stop) to choose the option not to use the heading/edit the attached records. Authority record then holds form without full stop; bib records retain form with full stop.

Where the heading in the bib record does need changing and therefore the form in the authority record is used to update it, then yes, I think the only way is to edit the full stops back in (or leave them out, of course).

Which is the worse sin - to include full stops in authority records or to omit them in bib records - I don't know!

We’ve only started using Authority control very recently.

As a starting point, to familiarise myself with the process of establishing/ merging/cleaning up records etc., I’ve been working from a list of top authors and then plan to move onto the Authorisation Reports (a couple of box files already await).

I am aware that in an Authority record, a full stop should only be used if the name ends in an initial, but if I remove all the full stops a mammoth task becomes even worse as I then have to go into each Catalogue record to re-establish the full stop.
What impact would it actually have if I left the full stop in the Authority Records?

I’d welcome any advice from those of you who have been using Authority Control for a while.

Steve,

If you have not already done so, it is a good idea to get a name for the main LMS server that will not change in the DNS. Suppose your current server's ip address resolves to talis.uni.ac.uk, and the new server is newtalis.uni.ac.uk. Get an alias library.uni.ac.uk set up to point to talis.uni.ac.uk. Then make sure that all Alto logins etc. connect to library.uni.ac.uk. When you finally switch over, all you need to do is get the DNS alias changed so that library.uni.ac.uk points to newtalis.uni.ac.uk.

Actually, that is the point when you discover that the old ip address and name are hard-coded all over the place. Firewall rules are usually based on ip address, not service name.

After you switch over, it is a good idea to disable logins (including ftp) on the old server. Perhaps even disable access in the /etc/hosts.allow file. Otherwise, people might download and print out-of-date letters and so on.

We have been using 546, particularly to indicate language of subtitles in videorecordings, for the benefit of deaf users.

However, to search by language, you need to have the relevant code in the 008 field (and 041 if more than one language is involved).

Hi

I’d be interested to know if anyone else has been using the 546 tag for a language note. We have been entering details such as “dual language text in ….” or “parallel text in ….” so that our branch staff can search for resources for migrant workers. Unfortunately, the 546 tag is not indexed in Talis Alto and we cannot customise the index in the latest upgrades of Alto. Does anyone just enter the information as a general 500 note, which is indexed, or are there other options?

Thanks

Nothing has come through to TDN but it may have got lost in cyberspace.

The details of this or any contributions to TDN can be sent to tdn.contributions@talis.com.

Ideally any scripts should include some instructions and if anything is sent as attachments then it is usually best to send them as a zip file to avoid issues with word documents or executables.

A confirmation message will be sent when contributions are received so if no message is received then send me a message to me directly brian.crampton@talis.com without attachments and I will contact you.
