Talis launches new Semantic Web publication; Nodalities Magazine

Today, Talis launches Nodalities Magazine, the Magazine of the Semantic Web. As a business, we have been actively raising awareness of new trends and possibilities arising from wider adoption of the Semantic Web through our Nodalities blog and the ZDNet blog. With the Nodalities Magazine we intend to provide a regular and accessible round-up of key trends and issues affecting those who are putting the Semantic Web to work in the mainstream.

Available online and in print, subscription is free of charge, and subscribers will receive subsequent print issues as they are published. In the first issue, articles include Tom Heath's look ahead to next week's Linked Data on the Web workshop in Beijing, Mills Davis on the value of Web 3.0, Nadeem Shabir on the development of a commercial Semantic Web application, and the full transcript of the recent interview with Sir Tim Berners-Lee.

Nodalities Magazine is edited by Talis Technology Evangelist, Paul Miller, and we invite offers of content for future issues.

Jim Hendler talks about the Semantic Web and Artificial Intelligence

In our latest podcast Paul Miller talks with Jim Hendler, Tetherless World Senior Constellation Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. They discuss Jim's early experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, before digging into some of his observations on competing interpretations of the Semantic Web and exploring the relevance of Semantic Web ideas to users of today's Web 2.0 applications.

In this follow-up to our original podcast last year, we discuss a project Zepheira has been undertaking to simplify conference management and enrich the delegate experience at this year's Semantic Technology Conference. The systems they have developed demonstrate some of the ways in which semantic web technologies can be integrated with existing processes in order to deliver increased value and functionality.

Talis to present at Xtech 2008

This year's premier European conference brings together the worlds of web development, open source, Web 2.0 and open standards. The 2008 conference will be held in Dublin at the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel from 6th - 9th May.

Ian Davis, Chief Technology Officer at Talis will present on the creation and ongoing evolution of a RESTful API. His presentation will focus on the design of API URLs, versioning strategies and techniques for preserving backwards compatibility, using real examples from The Talis Platform API. More information.

Barak Pridor Talks about ClearForest, Calais, Reuters and the Semantic Web

In our latest podcast, Paul Miller talks with ClearForest CEO, Barak Pridor. They discuss the changing business model in Reuters' core markets, and consider ways in which their acquisition of ClearForest in 2007 helps Reuters position for the future. We also consider the technical and business decisions behind Reuters' recent announcement of an open API for the new Calais Web Service, built upon ClearForest's technology.

Talis to speak at Semantic Technology Conference

Widely recognised as the world's foremost symposium on the commercialisation of semantic technologies, Talis is delighted to announce its support for this year's Semantic Technology Conference in San Jose, California. The event, which takes place from 18-22 May, gathers an impressive programme of speakers from across the semantic technology space, and promises to illustrate the many ways in which semantic technologies are already at work within the enterprise.

Talis staff will be involved before and during the event in various ways, beginning with a set of podcast interviews with a number of high profile speakers. On Wednesday May 21st, Talis CEO Dave Errington will participate in a panel of senior executives including Nova Spivack (Radar Networks) and Alex Iskold (Adaptive Blue). During the main conference programme, our CTO Ian Davis will present Talis' perspective on 'The Semantic Web as a Blue Ocean Opportunity'. In a half-day workshop entitled 'Developing Semantic Web Applications with the Talis Platform', Danny Ayers and Ian Davis will demonstrate the ease with which developers can engage with semantic technologies. Paul Miller launches new blog for ZDNet

Talis Technology Evangelist Paul Miller has been invited to contribute a weblog to the popular technology news site, ZDNet. Paul's new blog, The Semantic Web, builds upon a reputation gained with Talis' own Nodalities blog and will focus upon interpreting and analysing the evolving Semantic Web for a business audience.

5th European Semantic Web Conference

Talis involvement in Linked Data workshop at WWW2008

Talis' Tom Heath is one of the Chairs for the Linked Data on the Web workshop at WWW2008 in Beijing, China. The workshop on 22 April will serve to showcase the increasing importance of 'Linked Data' to the emerging Semantic Web, and a packed programme of presentations and demonstrations has been assembled from the peer-reviewed submissions. Two Talis presentations have been selected for the programme; Paul Miller and Rob Styles will be speaking on 'Open Data Commons: a license for Open Data'. Rob Styles together with Nadeem Shabir will also be delivering a paper entitled 'Semantic MARC, MARC21 and the Semantic Web'.

Talis presenting in W3C Track with Tim Berners-Lee at WWW2008

This year's Semantic Web session in the W3C track at WWW2008 concentrates on novel approaches and usage areas of the Semantic Web, as well as reaching out to new communities. Together with W3C director Tim Berners-Lee and Chris Bizer from Free University Berlin, Talis' Tom Heath will be talking about Linking Open Data in this afternoon session chaired by Ivan Herman (W3C).

W3C announces the publication of SPARQL

Talis is delighted to see the publication of SPARQL, a key standard for opening up data on the Semantic Web. Having worked in partnership with the W3C to shape the recommendations, this is an important milestone in making the Semantic Web usable for a broad class of applications in the enterprise. With the aim of enabling people to share, merge and reuse data globally, SPARQL query language allows you to search distributed data sources, regardless of data format. Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director explained that 'trying to use the Semantic Web without SPARQL is like trying to use a relational database without SQL'. Ian Davis', CTO at Talis commented "Talis' Semantic Web Platform provides its users with services using the SPARQL query language and protocol to allow searching of their data. We look forward to SPARQL being incorporated in many more applications enabling Web-scale integration of data between and within organisations." The full W3C press release can be viewed online.

Talis to present on ‘Realising the Potential of Web Relationships’ at the BlogTalk 2008 event

Talis Technology Evangelist Paul Miller will be presenting at BlogTalk. The event, which runs from 3-4 March 2008, is this year being held in the Irish city of Cork. Paul's paper, "Realising potential in the Web of Relationships," is part of a diverse programme that also includes a Keynote from Talis Platform Advisory Group member Nova Spivack.

Talis is pleased to join the BBC, OpenLink Software and Osmosoft in sponsoring next month's SemanticCamp at Imperial College, London.

SemanticCamp London is an unconference on the Semantic Web and related technologies that takes place in London on February 16th and 17th 2008 at Imperial College's Department of Computing.

SemanticCamp London is organised by Tom Morris and Daniel John Lewis, and follows the increasingly popular 'barcamp' format for events, with the traditional formal programme of presentations replaced by participants suggesting and democratically selecting topics that they would like to see discussed.

Talis CTO Ian Davis will be amongst those attending SemanticCamp London, where he will be available to demonstrate some of the latest developments on the Talis Platform.
