Ian Davis presents the Talis Platform to UK SWIG event

23 November 2007

Talis CTO Ian Davis delivered the opening address to the UK Semantic Web Interest Group meeting today, giving participants an insight into the workings of the Talis Platform. The meeting, hosted by HP Labs in Bristol, sees practitioners from across the UK's Semantic Web community hearing presentations on some of the innovative ways in which semantic technologies are being deployed by organisations such as the BBC and Ordnance Survey, as well as gaining insight into the latest research from UK universities. The packed programme clearly demonstrates the vibrancy and diversity of semantic web developments in the UK and elsewhere.

Ian's presentation included an overview of the technological underpinnings to the Talis Platform, and discussion of the design decisions influencing the way in which it is developing. He concluded by showing examples of the applications that benefit from being built upon the Talis Platform, including Talis' own community information product, Talis Engage.

Tom Heath and Enrico Motta win the 2007 Semantic Web Challenge

16 November 2007

Talis congratulates Tom Heath and Enrico Motta of the Knowledge Media Institute in winning the Semantic Web Challenge at the 6th International Semantic Web Conference running this week in Busan, Korea.

Their entry, Revyu.com, is a reviewing and rating web site that transparently converts content added by people into machine-readable RDF metadata for the Semantic Web. The application is designed to minimize the burden on users by reusing other Semantic Web data sources and inferring structured metadata rather than forcing its entry.

The Semantic Web Challenge is an annual competition that promotes innovation in the Semantic Web. This year's theme was to demonstrate the benefits of semantic technologies by developing integrated, easy to use applications that can provide new levels of Web functionality for end users on the Web, or within enterprise settings, beyond what is possible with conventional Web technologies alone.

Enrico Motta is the Professor of Knowledge Technologies at the Knowledge Media Institute, part of The Open University, with a research interest in Semantic Web technologies and services.

Tom Heath is completing his PhD research focused on using the Semantic Web to support recommendation-seeking in social networks. Tom will be joining Talis' Platform division in January 2008 where he will be leading research into enhanced relevancy and recommendation platform services.
