The Twenty Minute Union Catalogue
Submitted by Paul Miller on Thu, 2007-03-01 12:01.
In this video, Rob Styles demonstrates the power of the Talis Platform, and the ease with which shared library holdings can be combined to cost-effectively deliver a new generation of union catalogue.
This 40 minute video, longer than the advertised 20 minutes as Rob introduces a number of Platform services before starting the clock, is available for download in a variety of formats:
- Quicktime .mov [87Mb]
- Windows Media .wmv [188Mb]
- AVI [76Mb] - may require codec
Content is intended for a technologically aware audience, although potential and opportunities should be clear, even to those who do not understand all of the code on the screen.

Avi file seems to be out of sync :-/
Great Presentation, feel like building my own catalog now.
- The AVI video file appears to be out of sync the last few minutes though...
Error message
I tried this and came up with a request;
http://api.talis.com/bf/stores/holdings/services/augment?data-uri=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.talis.com%2Fbf%2Fstores%2Fukbib%2Fitems%3Fquery%3Domoo%26offset%3D0
This returns an error message:
data-uri parameter invalid http%3A%2F%2Fapi.talis.com%2Fbf%2Fstores%2Fukbib%2Fitems%3Fquery%3Domoo%26offset%3D0
Am I missing something?

Possibly a bug
Hi Phil,
That looks like a small bug in that service. We recently changed the URLs of some services to remove the /bf part. All the services should redirect to the new URLs but it looks like there's a problem with this one. If you try the following:
http://api.talis.com/stores/holdings/services/augment?data-uri=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.talis.com%2Fbf%2Fstores%2Fukbib%2Fitems%3Fquery%3Domoo%26offset%3D0
Then it should work.
Note I removed the /bf from the service URL. Not all the documentation has caught up unfortunately.
I'll file this as a bug to be fixed.
Thanks for tracking this down.
Ian
Holding store
I was expecting more positive results for a URL like:
http://api.talis.com/stores/holdings/items?query=0192853589&max=10&offset=0&sort=&xsl=&content-type=
Am I looking in the right place/

Not held in contributing libraries
Hi Phil,
The reason you are getting zero results is that none of the contributing UK Libraries have registered as having stock, when the store was created.

Holdings missing?
Dear Richard,
This item is in De Montfort University's stock, so perhaps we should talk about whether you are able to collect updates on a regular basis from us.

MIA or AWOL?
I've noticed this as well.
See these Cenote records with no Bolton holdings data: Mind Gym (although the record seems wrong anyway); a graphic novel; another graphic novel; and a seminal text on feline location.
Yet they're definitely in Prism: here; here; here; and here. I've seen copies of each of these books (and I heartily recommend the last one), so I know they exist. What's more, we've had them a while so it's not just a case of our holdings data in Source/Bigfoot lagging too far behind reality.
Any ideas?

Holdings Store
Hi Phil & Michael,
Being a 'concept-car' Cenote is excellent at both demonstrating possibilities and highlighting the fact that it is not a production system. Although the stores it uses are hosted in the live Platform, the processes used to maintain the data in those stores are snapshots for demonstration purposes. The consequences of this are being highlighted by your comments in this thread.
There is work underway to build the processes for the management of data flows into and between data stores in a way that will benefit all the applications that load data in to and consume the services provided by Platform stores.
Once these processes are in place, there will be an improvement in the consistence and currency of holdings data.
