lecture podcasts

Now I don't pretend to know very much about podcasts. I assume it would be possible somehow to record lectures and save in the correct format so they become podcasts. Then, what would be best way to make these available to students? How would these podcasts be stored? Would we need a repository for them , are they learning objects ?
List would be possible means of access , along with the course/module ID place a speaker which can be clicked to hear the lecture/s relevant to that course reading list. What about in the future PRISM which provides enrichments, should these podcasts appear there? or an introductory clip to the lecture?
