See how others build on the Talis Platform

Talis Platform logo"Building on a Platform" can sound daunting, as can working with an "API". Read on to see how easy it can be, and just how much you could do by copying a few lines of code...

To coincide with today's release of the first set of Talis Platform APIs, we have provided a set of examples to show some of the ways in which different services on the Platform can be called upon and integrated within your own applications.

Fancy adding a search box to any web page, allowing visitors to your site to query any library catalogue known to the Directory? Find out how, add any missing library that you need, or just try a search right now.

Search Bury Metro Libraries Collection

Fancy querying library holdings using Python, Java, Perl or PHP? Find out how.

Fancy looking up holdings from within a web page with REST? Find out how.

Fancy seeing how you can better understand the Directory with Sparql? Find out how.

We shall continue to add to these simple examples, and welcome contributions from TDN members as they begin to build new applications of their own, so do let us know how you get on.

I've been waiting for this ...

I can't believe I'm the first to comment on this, but ever since I left last September I've been waiting for the API to be released!

Exciting stuff!

Now I've got my username and password for TDN I'll have a play. I wonder how long it will take to worm its way to Slashdot?

See you soon,
Rich F

One application down

I've just wrote a quick application to incorporate Google spell check with Birmingham Uni's prism, if I wanted it to search Wolverhampton Uni's I take I would have to change "bham.swdefault" to "wolves.swdefault" or similar, where would I find a list of codes?

Rich

Nice one.

Firstly Rich, shouldnt you be slaving over your project?

Secondly what did you write it in, and could you send me the code to have a glance over?

Cheers
Matt

OK

No problem Matt, it's coming over in a tar ball to your e-mail address. It's written in Java (JSP) and uses AJAX --> it's tested in firefox.

Rich

excellent - just what we want to see! :-)

Would you be ok with sharing your code on the TDN, perhaps along with a wee bit of documentation to tell other libraries which bit they need to change?

No problem, I'll tidy it up a bit and add some comments etc... I've sent beta 1 to Matt ... should be with you early next week (weekend commitments)
